Hansi Flick sacked as Germany boss after 4-1 Japan defeat with Chelsea and Tottenham target Julian N

Hansi Flick has been sacked as Germany manager after a 4-1 friendly defeat to Japan.

The German football association confirmed the news, with record scorer and current DFB director Rudi Voller to step in against France on Tuesday.

A statement from DFB president Bernd Neuendorf read: "The committees agreed that the senior men's national team needs new impetus after the recent disappointing results.

"We need a spirit of optimism and confidence with a view to the European Championships in our own country.

"For me personally, it is one of the most difficult decisions in my life current term of office. Because I value Hansi Flick and his assistant coaches as football experts and people.

"But sporting success is the top priority for the DFB. Therefore the decision was unavoidable."

Flick's assistants, Marcus Sorg and Danny Rohl, were also relieved of their duties.

Incredibly, this is the first time a Germany manager has been sacked in the 123 year history of the football association.

All ten of Flick's predecessors avoided firing, including Joachim Low, who won the 2014 World Cup with Flick as his assistant.

The decision was made nine months from Euro 2024, which Germany host, with a current record of only four wins in their last 17 games.

German media outlets BILD claim former Chelsea and Tottenham target Julian Nagelsmann is the favourite to take the post.

The 36-year-old former Bundesliga-winning Bayern Munich coach has been out of work since being fired by the Bavarians in March.

In trading Bayern for Germany, he would follow the path of Flick, who left the record champions for the national team in 2021 a summer on from winning a historic European treble.

Beginning his tenure with an eight-game win streak, Flick's Germany came crashing down at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar amid protests from supporters against the team travelling, coupled with record-low viewing figures.
